Selects SNS and ALOER for a Supply Chain Consultancy

Geneva, June 2015 – SNS and ALOER, leading providers of supply chain consultancies and solutions, are proud to announce the completion of a Supply Chain Assessment study at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

At CERN, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles. With a logistics operation serving potentially around 10,000 people(staff and visiting researchers) as well as 4 major experiments distributed on a 27 km wide collider, CERN Supply Chain team saw major improvement opportunities to minimize costs and increase efficiency. They selected SNS and ALOER based on their proven experience as well as their ability to conduct the study within the required time frame.

The objectives of the study revolved around evaluating the current infrastructure of supply chain including warehousing operations, the processes of procurement, replenishment, warehousing and distribution as well as their logistics team structure. After a presentation of supply chain management challenges and a week of on-site visits and meetings, the consultants began their analysis and review of the data collected over a period of two months.

The first deliverable, due within 2 weeks of the site visits, was to provide a restructuring of the main store, a 30 years old facility. The SNS-ALOER consultants’ team provided 2 optional designs that would allow CERN to increase their storage capacity by 80% on pallet storage and 20% on shelving. The designs would also contribute to increased safety in operation as well as higher labour productivity.

The consultants continued their analysis and weekly e-reviews were conducted to ensure the results would match CERN expectations. A week of on-site presentations conducted at the end of April provided CERN with insight on all their current bottlenecks and areas to improve. The solutions suggested by SNS and ALOER consultants showed various opportunities for further cost reductions, increased traceability of the overall operations, increased safety and ergonomics to labour as well a faster response to customer requirements. The consulting team provided CERN with CAPEX, OPEX and ROI analysis for the various solutions as well as the most important KPIs and benchmarks to evaluate their operations.
